There has been a ton of misinformation swirling around the Internet about Twitter’s recent change to their API policy. I was little confused myself, but I am happy to see that Twitter has further clarified their position and it is great news for SponsoredTweets.com.
Ryan Staver from Twitter’s API team made this comment:
“I want to make sure this part is clear — this policy change isn’t meant to say that we are going to start policing if the content of something a user tweets is an ad or not. The policy change affects 3rd party services that were putting ads in the middle of a timeline.
So if Liz is paid by Reebok to tweet about how much she loves their new shoes, we are not going to be policing that any more than we were on Friday. This policy also *does not prohibit* services - ( like Ad.ly and SponsoredTweets) - and that help facilitate those relationships or even help her post the ads to her timeline on her behalf.
It *does prohibit* an application from calling out to a service to find an ad to serve to Liz that will get inserted into the timeline she is viewing.
The language is somewhat nuanced but it sounds like we might need to make the policy more explicit as a number of people are misinterpreting it.”
What does this mean?
This means we will not have to change to a more manual process as I originally stated. I think this is a great move on Twitter’s part as it helps us maintain more control over the quality of the posts and makes disclosure enforcement more consistent.
While the process of doing a sponsored tweet is not going to change we are still embarking on a major curation process. We <3 the Twitter ecosystem and want to do our part to keep it as clean as possible.

Thanks for this clarification. I think perhaps folks read too much into the new rules when announced. It seems more aimed at desktop and mobile Twitter clients which might show ads as if they were part of the timeline.

That's great news! I'm glad Twitter clarified their stance, and it didn't require a whole lot of changes to the SponsoredTweets system. I wasn't really thrilled about everything being manual :)

Now that you got a break and in the interest of fairness why not switch your payout rate to be the same for everyone. I always had a problem with paying a HIGHER % to your so called web celebs and other over rated Celebs
Be fair to all :)
Thanks

Excellent news! I had briefly heard something about ads on Twitter going away and I thought that would be very difficult for Twitter to police, but you explanation clears it up. Keep up the great service! Nothing but good results from Sponsored Tweets thus far.

I was also getting a little worried there myself! I'm quite new to your program and I'm still learning about it quite frankly. I missed a sponsored tweets opportunity simply because I didn't understand how it all worked.
At least your blog post assures us that we are still able to do the sponsored tweets!

I just read through your post and I enjoyed it. I am wondering if you're intending to publish additional articles to go in conjunction with this blog?

I wasn't sure what Twitter's stance on this was & found this post through Google. Good to know it can be done.
