For as long as the Sponsored Tweets platform has been live, I’m still somewhat surprised that many Tweeters are unaware that 1) there is a “Keywords” feature in their profile and that 2) this is one of the primary ways Advertisers perform targeting for their campaigns.

So I thought perhaps a short overview of the “keywords” feature might help Tweeters get better–and more–offers, and also clear-up any confusion there might be. I’ll provide my personal Sponsored Tweets profile as an example.

First, you want to sign-in to your account. NOTE: Once you sign-in, the “Opportunities” tab will be defaulted open, so click on the “My Account” tab to view the details of your account:

Once in the “My Account” tab, you should see something similar to this:

They keywords are in the very bottom field, highlighted in green. Obviously your keywords will look different than mine, because it’s highly likely you don’t Tweet about the same exact things I do. So, consider some of the topics you regularly Tweet about, and enter in those keywords to your profile. The numbers listed beside each keyword refer to the other Tweeters in the system who are using the same keyword(s).

You can only include 10 keywords, so think carefully about the subjects you talk about. And make sure these keywords are ones that are going to be relevant to your audience. I often talk about food, entertainment, Orlando, music, and humor (at least things I think are funny!), so my keywords reflect that.) Remember, the sponsored Tweets should be about things that are going to add value to your Followers. After all, you want them to be interested in your Tweets, and this will in-turn provide the most value to the Advertiser hiring you (and return for you, particularly if the Tweet is a Cost Per Click Opp).

I strongly urge you to sign-in to your Sponsored Tweets account as soon as you can, and make sure that you not only have keywords in place, but that the keywords are terms you regularly Tweet about and are relevant to both you and your audience. It could mean causing you to miss Opportunities if you don’t.

Once you have input keywords into your profile you’re increasing your chances of receiving Opportunities by far!

I hope this has been helpful! Please let us know if you have any questions.

One question, what does the number next to each of the keywords mean?

  4. ashley said on 7.29.10 at 10:20 am

@Dirk Sure. I'd actually included that in the original post but for some reason it got lost when the post went live. Weird! Anyway, those numbers reflect the other Tweeters that have chosen that same keyword in the system. It helps Advertisers to know what sort of inventory they're dealing with when they're targeting Publishers.

@Chris Glad to hear it. We've actually got several "FAQs" or "common issues" we plan on addressing in similar upcoming posts. If there's anything in particular you'd like us to focus on, don't hesitate to let us know.

@zulseffort Awesome! Check-out the post we just published, too, about ways to increase your Twitter audience. That should help with more Opps, too!

Oh-Me-Oh-My! An Ah-Haa moment going on for me. Thanks for making my understanding clearer. I've only been a member less than 24 hours ago, so there's still more to learn-and I already made a $1 from one sponsor.

    HI Ashley

I've been using the keywords feature since day one. I attempted to change some in @cadilacjax acct some time ago and it failed to update. Was quite frustrating actually but I haven't tried in a while so I will try again. I just wanted to change a couple of them but it wouldn't let me..hmmm any ideas?

  12. ashley said on 8.3.10 at 12:35 pm

@Lee Would you mind trying again? Those issues should've already been resolved.

It is actually very easy to add keywords, i have been changing mine often and everytime i do i get a new opp, so i think it might be best to rotate keywords often, as different sponsors are searching different keywords. of course you still want only relevant keyworkds
